The Sick Room

The only kind of illness I ever really get (other than all that stupid, in-the-past-thank-gawd stuff related to my endometriosis) is colds.  I think I've only had the full-blown flu once or twice in my life, fortunately.  But, when I get a cold, it is the MOTHER of all misery-inducing colds.  I kid you not.

So, after an awful night fighting a headache (which I thought would get better once I was upright but has only gotten [much] worse), I've got myself ensconced in the sick room today.  That'd be the library, since it has the movies and the flat screen in it.

Hang on, Tucker's gotta go out (being an "only" when you're sick is the pits!).

It's times like this, too, that I wish I had TV reception so I could mindlessly flip through channels, but I'll have to satisfy myself with one of the (let me count the ones I can see w/o getting up) . . . well, I got up to 70 individuals ones, not counting TV series(es?) and collections (hang on, just sneezed all over myself), so there should be SOMETHING I can find to entertain myself.  Plus two new Netflix DVDs.

Anyway, let's make sure I have everything necessary for my infirmary:
  • Hideously mis-matched outfit consisting of slippers, PJ pants with duckies on 'em, and an old, reclaimed bathrobe of the ex's that Calvin Klein would be embarrassed to have his name on, given the shape of it?  Check.
  • Two annoying cats trying to walk all over me?  Check.
  • Laptop at 1/2 battery power?  Check.
  • Bag of crocheting?  Check.
Hang on . . . I have to plug in the laptop.  And blow my nose.  Again.
  • Stepped-on cat (how was I to know she was laying right under me)?  Check.
  • Heating pad?  Check.
  • Telephone?  Check.
  • Blankets?  Check.
  • Headache?  Check.
  • Notepad & pen?  Check.
  • Long-lasting chews for the dogs downstairs?  Check.
  • Hot beverage?  Check.
  • Cold beverage infused with Vitamin C?  Check.
  • Kleenex?  Check.
  • Tall garbage for Kleenex, tall enough that Maisy can't reach in to eat the used tissues?  Check.
  • Saline nasal spray?  Check.
  • Vick's VapoRub?  Check.
  • Bowl of it'll-make-me-feel-better mint ice cream?  Check and consumed.
  • Copious amounts of Vitamin C, Vitamin D, plus pseudoephydrine (sp?) for sinus relief (which still has NOT kicked in yet, grrrrrr)?  Check and consumed.
So, there ya have it.  My day.  The chores will have to wait until later.  When I'm sick like this, I usually feel better in the late afternoon for a brief window of time.  That's probably when I'll head outside to do what needs to be done.

  2. Ooohhhh....I hope you feel better soon. I have to admit tho, I giggled as I read your list. I believe I have the same "sick" outfit as you do, as well as the annoying pets to make said illness worse. Take care of yourself!

  3. Oh man, I feel so bad for you! But at least you have yourself fully organized with everything in reach. Now put some diapers on the dogs and call it a night!

  4. Apple Pie, ha ha! Diapers on the dogs! Actually, I might consider a diaper for myself as that's the one thing that's SO annoying about keeping liquids goin' thru my system: they seem to need to come out toooooo frequently!

(Okay, that was all TMI, wasn't it?)

And, double bonus: my headache is finally gone!!! I was even able to just do a long chat with a lovely rep at Dell (online chat, mind you) regarding my new computer purchases! I certainly never expected to get THAT done today! :)

So, thanks for all the well wishes, Mom, Ruth, and Ms. Chicken Pot Pie! :)

  5. where's the megadoses of zinc?! and mama pea's chicken soup? Had to laugh at the dog eating tissues, here too! I feel you on the solo thing, I hated being sick or pregnant without hubby around. He made it back just in time for both births but honestly I would have rather had him around for the backaches and indigestion. I hope you get to feeling better this evening, colds suck, no bones about it. Glad to hear the headache has left by now.

  6. Oh, yuck - hope you feel better soon! I, too, giggled at your list. And if it makes you feel any better, there are times when I spent half, if not all, my days in your so-called sick outfit, i.e. mismatched pjs, etc.!

  7. Terrible to have those chores to tend to when I'm sure you don't even want to go outside! My only comparison is the lot of us being sick when P is out of town. NO FUN. Good luck....rest up!

  8. Thank you for recognizing that colds are not the flu. I have had the flu once in my life, too, Jan 97 not that I'd remember.

I hate (is hate too strong a word? no.) people who call everything the flu. most people have probably never had it. it kicks your ass.

  10. Hope you're feeling better. I'll add you to the long and growing list of sick friends. We all seem to be passing the same virus around and around. I never get sick and I'm in the middle of the third round. I'm actually hoping we get the "historic snow event" they're predicitng for tomorrow so we can just stay in, safe and warm. Hope you're able to do the same!

  11. You forgot the echinacia (sp?) !! I sure hope this will be a short cold. I can't stand being sick ... animals in, animals out and it never stops.

Rest as much as you can, including some naps.
    Many hugs to you.

  12. Erin, no zinc tablets in the house, I realized (after you reminded me)! Will have to put that on the shopping list. I DID get some of Mama Pea's chicken soup in my belly, tho! :)

And, Mtn Child, I *DID* forget the echinacea! How could I have?? But, a peek told me that I'm out of that, too: onto the shopping list it goes. I thought it was in my Throat Coat tea, but it . . . snot (a little cold humor there).

Thanks for all the wonderful wishes, friends!
