What's wrong with this picture? It's 6:36 AM, and I'm on the keys! And, I'm already doing office work here at home, a full pot of best / percolated coffee has been brewed, the aquarium has been topped off, AND I've gotten some dishes done!
Why?
Morning breath. Really!
I was awoken at 4:55 (fully light outside*, btw) by mosquitoes. There's a hole in a screen somewhere. They came at me, one after another (they are attracted to the carbon dioxide we expel when we breathe), until I finally gave up at 5:40 and got up. Where's a mosquito netting bed canopy when you need one? (Growing up, we all slept under one . . . but I have a sneaky feeling that had more to do with all the cracks & crevices in that house rather than that the bugs were worse then.)
I've got friends stopping up this AM for a super quick visit (and they already called to say that they were on their way - insane morning people!!!), so I gotta go brush my teeth & get dressed, but I'll try to be back to post some pictures yet this morning.
*Civil twilight arrived at 4:32 AM this morning. That is defined as no "artificial illumination is required to carry on ordinary outdoor activities". We'll gain 11 minutes of light in the morning before the vernal equinox (when morning twilight arrives at 4:21 a.m.)!

Solstice Confusion
Today is supposed to be the shortest day of the year, right? Why, then, does my Monthly Sunrise / Sunset chart show that December 18th, 19th, 20th, 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 24th, 25th, and 26th ALL share the same amount of daylight (here)? (8 hours and 24 minutes at our lat/long.) I think I need a mathematician . . . or astrologer . . . or astronomer . . . or SOMEONE to explain that to me.
Just out of curiosity, I took a peek at the amount of daylight some of the rest of you readers are experiencing today (and, apparently, in the surrounding days!).
For folks around Albany, New York, you will get 9 hours and 2 minutes of daylight today.
Military families in Virginia Beach, Virginia are getting 9 hours and 39 minutes of sunshine (provided it's shining)!
Relatives in southern California will enjoy 9 hours and 53 minutes of holiday sun today.
"Locally", our readers in Minneapolis / St. Paul are getting 8 hours and 46 minutes of daylight today. 300 miles gains you 22 minutes of light! Go figure!
And, even though I have no readers in Alaska (do I??), Anchorage is experiencing 5 hours and 27 minutes of sunshine while in the dark north (Barrow), I get this reading: "Sun: down all day". Where do you wish YOU lived?
