Fall (In More Ways Than One)

Fall - real fall - is in the air today. Last night we got down to 25 degrees or so, and the mercury has hardly risen 10 degrees more than that today. It's the kind of day that - with the wind blowing - the bridge of your nose almost hurts . . . just a little bit. I LOVE IT! ;)

And, I've been the only one outside today doing chores (and experiencing the crisp air) due to another kind of fall. The bad kind. The really, really bad kind. The Tom-is-s0-incredibly-lucky kind.

Tom fell off the roof yesterday. Completely. Not the "slip down the ladder" kind of fall off the roof. We're talkin' "sitting on the peak of the roof on your butt when your feet below you lose all traction" kind of fall off the roof. (And zinc roofs are like . . . well, a big piece of slippery metal!) Then, "a massive crash onto the hard wooden deck below" kind of fall off the roof. He is / we are SO, SO, SO! lucky in so many ways. #1, He was on one of the "bump-out" roofs and not the main roof. #2, Even though it was extremely hard, landing on the flatness of the deck was wayyyyyy better than landing in the boulders next to it. #3, Somehow, he landed in between the upturned 5-gallon bucket, large cooler, and deck chair all sitting on the deck in that small area.

Amazingly enough, he didn't break anything . . . we don't think. He banged up his arm pretty good when it caught the railing as he pitched forward once he "hit the deck" (no pun intended!), but that's minor. What's causing the problems is his feet - heels, to be exact. Well, an arches. He landed smack on his heels and then, as I said, pitched forward from the impact. The bottoms of his feet took all of it. So, understandably, walking is a bit painful for him at the moment.

On the up side, he'd already had a massage therapy appointment scheduled for last night, so our massage therapist was able to go over him with a fine-toothed comb. And, aside from some major "compression" and bruising, there seems to be no permanent damage.

But, needless to say, we've been keeping him off his feet since, and, when he does have to get up and move around, it's a slow, painful process! I shudder to think what work is going to be like for him tomorrow! Hopefully he can park himself behind his desk and STAY there all day!
