Today I . . . .

  • Cleaned out my purse and wrote a fun little blog post about it.
  • Put in a load of laundry but, instead of moving what was on top of the washing machine onto the dryer (so it didn't jiggle off), I actually PUT EVERYTHING AWAY!  (What a concept, I know!)
  • Entered my past few purchases from the local dairy.  (I'm on a 'trades' basis with them, and so I need to keep track of what I pick up.)
  • Entered my past few mileage / gasoline notes for the Chevy 1-Ton.  I like to keep track of my MPG on the vehicles.  Best mileage?  14.8 MPG.  Worst?  10.5 MPG, plowing last winter.
  • Finally got around to downloading images from my camera.  (Including the new header photo - last night's sunset as I drove out of town.  I must admit, I'm pretty happy with that one!)
  • Entered some coins into my coin collection database.  (Yes, I know, I am SO exciting!)
  • Vacuumed flies from the windows in the library.
  • Vacuumed, vacuumed, vacuumed . . . and then vacuumed some more . . . flies from the windows in the master bedroom.
  • Finally began putting the sitting area part of the master bedroom to rights.  I definitely need to have the rug (and the chair!) steam-cleaned, but, until then, it's down.  That rug was rolled up since we moved in 2006, so those wrinkles have some "flattening" out to do.
  • Downloaded pictures from the trail camera which was set up in the poultry yard.  The bad news is I didn't get anything interesting.  The good news is I didn't get anything interesting.  Which means, I still have 3 geese.  For tonight, anyway!
  • Made myself a decent dinner and washed a big batch of dishes.
  • Ate dinner and watched 'Rumor Has It'.
  • Realized that, since it was only 8:45 and not 9:45 and the generator's running, I should get the washing into the dryer and do some ironing.  I haven't had ironed clothes for work in weeks . . . which means I iron each morning, whether the generator is on or not (not ideal).
  • And now I'm wrapping up my day with a little last deskwork plus loading some images onto my Chicken Mama Designs FB page.

What'd YOU do today?

  1. Good job!!

This past summer, while we were out and about, the door on my dad's house blew open and was open all day long. There must have been at least 500 flies inside when we returned!! Fortunately, we were able to release the vast majority from where they had collected in the screens before they died, but I did spent the next couple of days swatting the stragglers!

  2. We really haven't been bothered by flies here on the main floor but I think your dad is raising them up in his office. He keeps our old canister vacuum up there and at least two times a day I can hear him sucking up flies.

Sounds like you had a very profitable day "at home!" So maybe you didn't lounge on the deck all day in the sunshine reading, but doesn't it feel soooo good to get stuff done that you've been looking at (and dissatisfied with) for a long time? Why we can't get those things done when we first notice they are bugging us . . . ? Okay, I know it's 'cause there are those 4,000 other things that MUST be done to keep everything simply functioning on a day to day basis. Ah well, someday we'll all be organized. (ya, sure, you betcha.)

  3. Absolutely love your new header picture!! Mother Nature is just the best painter in the world.

I'm in the process of getting my chicken coop built. A friend and I bought the lumber, built the base and got two walls done. There is still the roof to go - we ran out of 2x4's. It is not assembled since we can't transport it to it's location in one piece, WAY too heavy! Pretty soon I won't have to worry about the old chicken pen collapsing this winter. YEAH!!!!

  4. What a beautiful photograph CM! It is absolutely stunning. I had house guests from Friday night to this morning, so I didn't get to any of The List. I did finish winterizing the inside of the shed to get ready for bunny moving, built one of my new raised beds, cleaned up remaining debris, let the sheep out for one more, frantic grazing session, did laundry, and cooked, cooked, cleaned, cleaned, cooked some more.

  5. I'm a nerd about keeping a log of my fuel/mpg stuff too, but I don't let my nerdiness get out of control, like say... coin collecting! LOL, had to say it :) That header photo is beautiful! My day was a bit similar yesterday in that I did a "super clean" where I cleaned the house and then actually had the energy left to do the windows and shutters, we have those white plantation shutters on all the windows - not many flies but the pollen gets gross if not wiped down. Windows are shut for the season so I figured I would get that chore off the mental list. Love the bedroom guns, can you pick off poultry predators from the bedroom window? You should get a rotating sniper thingy mounted in your window :)

    As always, "iron-schmiron"... hugs!

  6. p.s. been meaning to ask you, what washer/dryer do you use since you're off grid?

  7. I'm so sorry to hear about Annie Blue... do you think this thing is responsible for the poultry as well? Oh I wish you would be given a long streak of happiness and prosperity, the loss of a beloved pet in this way is a terrible thing to deal with, my thoughts are with you.

  10. Sorry about your cat. Long time reader, rarely comment. This got to me after all you've been through!

  11. Oh CM-so sorry to hear about your kitty!! Why does wildlife have to be so darn wild?!! Pets are such a huge part of our families and losing one is heartbreaking. You'll be in my thoughts today.

    You're header pic is glorious!

  12. I wanted to stop back by and give you a big {HUG}. So so sorry to hear about Annie Blue. I too am wondering if this is your poultry pest.

  14. Thank you, thank you, everyone. Tears are back in my eyes again . . . just when I'd thought (hoped?) I was done.

Yes, I think this fisher cat (some call them fishers, some call them fisher cats) *IS* my predator.

I'm getting a long blog post about it all ready in my head, and you'll see it surface soon.

I actually physically ACHE today . . . like I've had the flu. Weirdest thing. (Or maybe not so?) I've never had a beloved pet die in my arms before. (Nope, poultry just doesn't count: not when you're gonna eat 'em.)

But, thanks so much, everybody. It truly DOES help, knowing you're all out there, thinking of me.

And, Cindy, thanks for commenting! As I've said before and will surely say again, it helps SO much to know that people are out there, reading. It's just so easy to get sucked into the "who would want to read this drivel" mode and then not post. ;)

  15. What a horrific experience. I can't and don't want to imagine it.

  16. When I was checking out this animal, I came across some audio clips someone had recorded you might find interesting. I was thinking of way back when you were hearing a strange almost human sound, not a wolf, but didn't know what it was - definitely creepy. I can't imagine how to secure those poultry from these, they look almost mink-like in that they can wriggle and squeeze anywhere. Do you have traps?

You will feel pretty low for quite awhile. When I lost my first pet as an adult, I took it quite hard, as she had been with me through everything, including divorce, and I was never truly alone when I had her. I expect you feel the same way about Annie Blue.

  18. So sorry for your loss! If it's the same guy/gal that took your birds, you have a target!

  19. GrowMyOwn, thanks for coming over and taking the time to comment. You're right: unless you have to go thru it yourself, there's no need to TRY to imagine it. It was awful. I just felt so helpless . . . knowing there was nothing I could do for her. Too much damage had been done.

Erin, you are absolutely right about the audio IDs - I'm going to blog about that.

Jordan, I definitely thought of you and what you've gone thru with your goats. :(
