Prepping for Class

Sorry!  No time to post!  Gotta run!

I spent the entire day on Wednesday, after blogging . . . and then up until 7:00 PM, outside building the prototype brooder that I'm going to have my class build over this weekend's two-day course.

Yesterday, last night, and today was an extended overnight for me & The Peanut here at Swamp River Ridge.  She and I ran errands yesterday afternoon and then visited "Tommy" in his new (and final, after house-sitting, etc. these past months) apartment!  (More pictures on that to follow.  Last night was his first night in his new digs.)

And then there was dinner with friends, and chores today, and, and . . . I've gotta go to bed.  I'm NOT ready for this class that begins in exactly 10 hours.  (Are we surprised?)

  1. Blessings to you as you lead your class. You'll be wonderful I'm sure of it! I'm preparing to leave tomorrow for a week long mission trip to Annville, KY where my team will be doing housing rehab for Appalachian residents there. I understand the not having enough hours to get ready. I have an empty suitcase sitting on my couch!

  2. Good luck with the class! I think it's very cool you can teach other people such useful information.

  3. One day of class down, one to go! I think they were hoping to build (if anything) more of a chicken tractor than a simple brooder, but that would have been the whole 2 days right there!

Otherwise, aside from learning I had bad breath at the end of the day (constant talking for 8 hours + an endless cup of coffee), it went pretty well!

I just wish I wasn't so scatter-brained and off on this tangent and that all the time!

  6. Claire, a chicken tractor is much like it sounds.

Recent studies have shown that chickens (hens) produce better (more eggs) if they exercise their legs in an elliptical fashion vs. the straight back-and-forth of walking.

So, some farmer who's now making millions off the idea combined this finding with the need to continually turn over the ground in a chicken coop / yard and invented this little riding tiller that people are introducing their chickens to!

The tractor / tiller is strapped onto the chicken so that she's sitting in the tractor "seat", and her feet are held fast to the "pedals" with Velcro . . . and away they go!

You wouldn't believe the difference it's made in my chicken yard . . . and the egg production is through the roof!!!
