Close your eyes for a minute, and listen to what is going on around you.

What do you hear?

This is what I hear:
  • The river a couple of hundred feet below the house . . . burbling over the rocks.
  • The slight readjustment as the window frame behind my head creaks and quietly pings with the breeze, the changes in humidity.
  • A mosquito . . . dammit!
  • The click-click and electric buzz as I turn on my bedside light to find & eradicate said mosquito. Hmm, must be on the outside of the window screen.
  • The peepers - my most favorite summertime sound - from down at the river's edge.
  • A timber in the house frame cracking as the house settles for the night.
  • The quiet, periodic, murmur of my laptop.
  • And, from downstairs, the soft aluminum clank of Tucker's tags as he scratches an itch.
That is all.

Isn't it lovely?

  1. Lovely post. Just lovely. Makes me want to close my eyes and drift off into dreamland. And I just got up.

  2. Tanx, Mama! Maybe you can take some time in the hammock this afternoon to do just that? (Although it's way too hot up here already to even THINK about purposefully laying in the full sun!)

  3. That was lovely. I can tell you appreciate the quiet.
Our place is so close to the highway that it's difficult to block out that constant noise (20,000 vehicles a day is what I learned from a recent traffic study). I crave peace and quiet, so please go and enjoy some more for me, OK Chicken Mama?

  4. You are blessed! Well written.

I am hearing people yacking, the clicking of the keyboard and the AC fan above my cube. Hmmm should turn some music on to drown it all out.

I want to hear my pups panting as they have been playing, the tinkling splash of water as they jump in the pool to cool off. I would very much like to listen to Josie peacefully munching on grass and snorting and sighing in contented. Or the sound of her footfalls as we wander on a peaceful path in the woods.

  5. Speaking of well written . . . I love what you WISHED you were hearing, TJ! Especially the sounds of Josie in the pasture . . . or in the woods. What you know you'll GET to experience at the end of the day or week or whatever is what makes what you're CURRENTLY experiencing bearable!

And, Ruthie, 20,000 vehicles a DAY? Oh, shoot me now. Although, we each adapt to our surroundings. For three years, Tom and I lived just up from Lake Harriet in SW Mpls. in a wonderful, old neighborhood. It was a bustling area, but we were very content there. Although, I have to admit that we also knew it was temporary, and we were driving up here nearly every weekend! And, even tho you're so close to the highway, you have obviously created your own, wonderful nature area there so close to busyness!
