21 July 2006: A good friend of ours just finished the first ever summer crossing of the Arctic Ocean to the North Pole! He wanted to raise awareness of Global Warming and how that is threatening the very existence of the polar bear. If the summer ice on the Arctic Ocean keeps melting like it currently is, polar bears could be extinct by 2050. Pretty scary, huh?! His and his expedition partner's trip was successful - Global Warming is so real that it prevented them from returning on the ice! It was so soft by the time they reached the Pole that there were no longer safe pans to camp on at night. A Russian ice breaker had to come pick them up. Tom met him at the airport when they flew into Minneapolis, and, a couple of days later, we welcomed them home with a party at the local art colony. While we were decorating, one of the local artists "painted" a life-size polar bear on the wall with white Christmas lights!
