Home

The year 2006 has not started out the way we'd hoped nor expected. Counting today, Tom has been home 3 days this month. Work took him unexpectedly out to Portland, Oregon the first week of January - returning home (for slightly over 24 hours) just in time to celebrate his birthday on the 6th. But, then our world temporarily stopped.

On the afternoon of Friday, January 6th, Tom's brother (it's only the two of them) had a horrible auto accident. As he was driving down a county road, an 18-year old leaving high school blew a stop sign and blind-sided him on the rear driver's side of his Suburban causing it to roll.
Tom and I have been down there with the family ever since - Tom since Saturday, the 7th, and me since Tuesday, the 10th. We drove down to southwest MN to see their dad this past weekend - to talk to him face-to-face. The injuries are extensive and serious. At this point, the extent/ability of recovery is the question. But, yesterday - our last day before we had to return home - was a banner day! It was Day 9 after the accident, and, for the very first time, he woke up! He was able to respond to some simple questions and even asked some of his own (around the tracheotomy). That's not to say that he's out of the woods, but it was HUGE progress that he finally woke up and could respond to us.
Anyone who would like further information can contact us directly (and not on the blog out of respect for his privacy).

HUGE thanks to my folks who stepped in and took care of Maisy the whole time and drove out to feed Miss Kitty and do chores twice a day. THANK YOU! And, we have been so touched and honored by all the e-mails and phone calls of love, support, and well wishes that we've received. Thank you for making us feel so well cared for.

And, to those of you who are just now hearing of this all for the first time: my apologies, but I know you can understand that the time element, busyness, sleeplessness, stress, and emotions of the last week simply didn't allow for proper communication.

We both hope to get our heads back on straight this week, and, for me, that will include proper updating of the blog here. So, please check back in a day or two.
