July 2nd

Good morning!  It's a gorgeous, gorgeous day out there, so, naturally & like the majority of the rest of you, off to work I go!  But, while I eat my fresh strawberries for breakfast from Mama Pea's garden, I thought I'd take time for a quick post.

I had yesterday off and slept in . . . until 3:00 PM!  Geez, Louise!  But, I know I needed it.  I was pretty exhausted.  I'd planned to get lots of grass cut, but morning rains prevented that.  Instead, I did get a bunch of work done in the chicken yard and scrubbed up a bunch of eggs.  I set a trap:  I've lost two chickens lately to some sort of critter.  A weasel or something, I'm thinking.  At first, I thought it was a pine marten, but previous experience has proven that a pine marten would have done a LOT more damage.  So, I think it's something smaller that can't haul the chicken out but instead leaves it at the base of the inside of the fence to chew on.  Hmph.  We'll see if there anything in the trap this AM.

Two days later than expected (I was getting a little concerned), I got a phone call from Tom late last night.  They'd all just flown back into Talkeetna (from the base of Denali).  They'd summitted at midnight on the 27th.  Everyone was in one piece but with lots of stories to tell.  He said that they were dirtier than anyone could imagine, and he couldn't wait to shower and change out of the shirt he'd been wearing for the past 18 days!  They expect to arrive back home on Sunday or Monday.

I got my first daylily bloom of the year on Tuesday.

And, with that, I'd better get ready for the day.  If I don't have a chance to write before the Fourth, have a wonderful and SAFE holiday weekend!

  1. Hey Chicken Mama! Pretty, pretty flower! I'm glad to hear Tom and the others are safely down the mountain. Eighteen days in one shirt?!?!? Oh my...
I sure hope you catch something in your trap!
Have a BEAUTIFUL weekend, friend! I know it won't be YOUR weekend, but enjoy it none the less!

  2. 18 days...maybe it stops stinking after awhile...or you don't smell yourself!! If you're tired and happy, then that's all well...if not, time for more sleep. Sometimes you just need a catch up day. I wake up so much at an early time, earlier than I need to, but then fall asleep in the evening as soon as I am comfortable...

  3. Eeeew, I hope you catch your critter, I would certainly hate to find the carcasses first think in the morning, at least with other things they carry them off! Hope you have a good 4th weekend, I know you will be busy!

  5. Thanks for the holiday wishes, everyone, and right back atcha! ;)

Nothing in the trap yet. It's aggravating how smart those critters are!

BTW, the mosquitoes were so thick in the chicken house this morning that I heard the WHINE of them before I was completely in the door! ACK! (But, that's what warm temps & humidity will do.)
