Despite the fact that the dogs (and we) were enjoying a romp on the frozen river only last week, several sure signs of spring are here.

The song birds are displaying their vibrant courtship colors: brilliant yellow for the American Goldfinches, and bright raspberry for the Purple Finches.

The baby chipmunks - their parents having been curled up underneath some log or rock or pile of scrub all winter - are scurrying hither and thither underneath the bird feeders.

The first flocks of honk, honk, honking Canada Geese landed on the river this week, and we see mating pairs of Mallards and other beautiful ducks (that I still need to learn to identify) when we take our nightly walks down to the river now.

The grouse are beginning their courtship drumming (causing no small amount of vexation for Tucker), and, day before yesterday (drumroll, please), the veeeery first teeny-tiny shoots of green could be seen coming up - here and there - between last year's old, brown tufts of grass!
