On Sunday morning, when Tom's sister-in-law and her girlfriend dropped the guys off here to work, the automatic door lock (VERY poorly placed) accidentally got knocked as they were all getting out . . . quite effectively locking the keys in the car. Here are Tom and his brother (in sub-zero temperatures) trying to locate the hidden set of keys under the snow-impacted carriage of the vehicle. No luck. The magnetic key holder must have fallen off. No problem, we have GM's OnStar.
Now, here's where the FYI part comes into play. Turns out that (despite their advertisement that a message sent via satellite will unlock the vehicle) you also need CELLPHONE SERVICE AS WELL AS a satellite beam. And, of course, there's no regular air wave cellphone service up here in the boondocks. Oops!
Fortunately, by this time, the errant hidden set of keys HAD been found buried under impacted snow and ice. And, to their credit, GM was ready to send out a locksmith, although, by our figuring, the nearest certified GM locksmith would have been a minimum of 3 hours away. Hmmmmm. Makes you think, doesn't it?!
